Lillian : Victorian Mantis Project

Lillian victorian mantis acrylic painting

One of the completed Victorian Mantis paintings. Her name is Lillian and was painted for my husband who really loves his tiger lillies. I have submitted this image for inclusion in the “Antennae of Inspiration: The Insect Art Project” by Out of Step Books. They’re putting out some great art books…. go check them out!

Victorian Mantis Project: couple new concept sketches

And the sketching continues…. I’ve decided to do a couple cameo inspired paintings for my two oval dome glassed frames and the sketch above is one of them… I have a second in the works with and adorable jumping spider in it (they are so cute!).

I have been researching all things victorian and came across grave cages….I’d heard of the bells, the windows… but cages? so cool… first thought was ‘were they worried about zombies too?” Turns out they were just trying to keep the grave robbers out.

Victorian Mantis Project : sketches and old frames

I’ve been playing with some different poses and styles and spending lots of time looking at old daguerreotypes trying to figure out how those hairstyles were done! I have decided I really…. really like sausage curls.

Here are a few of my preliminary sketches…

I have a few more frames needing repair. This is all new to me so I’ll be posting the ups and downs of restoring them to their original beauty.

New Project : Victorian Praying Mantises

Most artists I know have a few themes they revolve around. Even those that struggle with the idea that they have no ‘style’ or unifying theme to their work… they usually do. Simply put we create the things we like.

I like bugs. Huge horns on rhino beetles… fur coat wearing moths…. most have a variety of textures to play with…. and of course my favorite feature… huge eyes.

Praying mantises are my favorite and I have circled back from my previous seahorse fetish to focus on the mantises.

Enter the setting…. I have lately been consumed with all things victorian. I’ve recently bought an old victorian house that I posted about here.. Been a while… , and I’ve always been drawn to the ornateness (dare we say gaudy?) of the victorian decorating style. I also love the victorian bustle style dress, it looks like dessert to me.

If you’ve stayed with me this far we’re coming to the point…. praying mantises seem to be physiologically designed for the bustle dress…. who else’s butt sticks out that far naturally? I toyed with this idea quite sometime ago… Victorian praying manis and I think I’ve let it simmer long enough.

I propose to complete a fairly large (30 – 50 pieces at least) body of work devoted to exploring this theme. I have never undertaken a project like this and am quite excited at where it might take me.

I spent today at a local antiques mall buying up some beautiful frames….

I am really loving the way these frames were works of art on their own… and if anyone wants to give the rabbi a home, sans frame, let me know… he looks kinda sad to find himself in my overly gentile home :)

Squeeeeee! look at this one!!! What can I say but I’m going to have to work long and hard to produce a work of art that can out-shine this baby!

I have a pair of these… simple, yes, but they have bubble glass which I’ve only recently discovered so I’m very very pleased to find them. I think they need a couple ‘cameo’ style victorian mantises painted for them.

In my next post I’ll show a few more frames, some of my preliminary sketches and insight into my brainstorming for ideas.

Mona Lisa my way

Acrylic on canvas board

I did this one for an upcoming show at the The Shoe Factory Art Co-op. My first submission to a juried show. Got my fingers crossed!
I expected this to be a mildly boring piece to do … friends were suprised I didn’t through skulls, bats or the random seahorse into it :) … but I really enjoyed it after all. I was forced to look much closer at the original than I ever had before and it was inspiring :)  I’m thinking of doing the girl with the pearl earring next.. maybe.

Hey diddle diddle……

This was an absolute blast to do…. first, I have made it my answer to everyone over the years who’s told me I should illustrate children’s books instead of tattoo…. so there :P lol.  Second… the woman wearing this is so pale that the colors just glow on her. We’ve also started talking about a Mayan priestess ladybug scene (complete with sacrificial aphid) for her other arm…. And… has commissioned a flamingo painting (that I’m starting tonight) Wheee!
Sometimes work is too much fun to be ‘work’ :)

Been a while….

Long story short…. bought a house, not just any house… a 1867 victorian (squeeeee!!!!) Ok, I’m very excited about my new project ( people have done nasty modernizing things to it that I must undo) so I realized the other day that not only have I not painted much at all but I have let this blog die :(

So, because I have no new paintings and I’d like to begin the resurrecting of this blog I will share some photos of my new baby (house) and some tattoos I’ve done recently….

See all the destroying I’ve been doing? Cardio and lead poisoning all rolled into one :)

A prettier view…. I have yet to rip apart the outside, but that siding will go sooner or later

These two are different angles of the third floor (formerly) maid’s quarters…. and what will be my art studio. It’s huge and interestingly shaped… I love it.

Pretty lily for a first timer… it took 3 hrs and she was a trooper!

This is on Nadia, our periodic counter girl, she is awesome and she lets me do wonderfully bizarre stuff on her.
